Tips for giving effective feedback to music students … 2017-10-28T23:44:09+00:00

This is a subject that I think very frequently about. Here’s 4 decent tips to begin; check back in here for future expansion.

  1. Build – break – build. Give a positive, a negative, then a positive.

  1. When wording your negative feedback, try to say it in a positive way:

  • “Let’s do it again and try….”
  • “How about we work on this…?”
  • “We could try it again differently…”
  • “Your right thumb is perfect!! Can you raise your left thumb just like your right?”

  1. Avoid the word ‘but’ – in general it reduces the impact of the words before it to … zero. Try using ‘and’ instead.

  1. Things you could say when the sonic impact is highly negative:

  • “You tried really hard! Well done!”
  • “That was much better than last time.”
