The first section of the video will be a performance of the entire piece / the part the student must learn. If you haven’t heard the piece / part before, press play and listen to this performance. If you have heard the piece / part before, forward to the next section of the video.

The next section of the video will be a demo of phrase 1.

  1. Press play.
  2. Listen to phrase 1 and how it sounds.
  3. Stop the video.

The next section of the video will be a tutorial: a step-by-step instructions on how to play phrase 1, with detailed instructions about which finger to put on which string.

  1. Press play.
  2. Get the student to play along with the tutorial, following my instructions about which finger to put on which string. When the tutorial for phrase 1 is finished, press stop.
  3. Rewind to the point where the tutorial for phrase 1 begins. Again, get the student to play along with the tutorial, following my instructions about which finger to put on which string.
  4. Ask the student if they can play phrase 1 without looking at the video. Repeat steps 2-3 until the student can play phrase 1 without looking at the video.

Next, the student has to learn how to play the phrase in rhythm.

  1. Rewind to the point where the demo of phrase 1 begins.
  2. Press play.
  3. Get the student to listen to me playing phrase 1 in rhythm.
  4. Stop the video.
  5. Press play. Ask the student to try playing along with the video, trying to match my rhythm as well as they can.
  6. Repeat this process until you think the student matches my rhythm.

The next part of the tutorial will be me playing a demo of phrase 2, and then a tutorial of phrase 2. Complete the same steps with phrase 2 as you did with phrase 1.

Next, the student must link phrase 1 and 2. Work on playing phrase 1 and phrase 2 together. When this is satisfactory, learn phrase 3. Next, work on playing phrase 2 and 3 together. When this is satisfactory, learn phrase 4 … etc. etc. Continue this pattern until the student has learnt all phrases they have been assigned that week, and can play them in pairs.

Next, ask the student to try playing each phrase one after the other from the beginning to the end of the piece.

When the student can play their phrases sequentially, in a confident manner:

  1. Rewind to the point where the demo of the piece begins.
  2. Press play.
  3. Ask the student to try playing along with the demo of the piece.
